August 13th - August 16thĪugust 13th, 1940, was marked in Wehrmacht’s plans as the Adlertag, “Eagle Day”.
This played an important part in the liberation of Tartu that finally happened on August 25th. But instead of attacking the enemy’s well-reinforced positions head-on, the Soviet forces crossed Lake Peipus, having transported several thousand troops behind the enemy lines. Having liberated Narva in late June of 1944, the Red Army moved further west, towards Tartu, Estonia’s second largest city. The Germans hoped to take the enemy by surprise, but that wasn’t enough: as a result they lost half of their tanks, and in a couple of weeks the entire 7th Army of Wehrmacht was encircled and surrendered to the Allies. But in August of ‘44 Germany lacked enough firepower for an effective counterattack, and the Allies controlled the air. August 6th - August 9thĪ desperate counteroffensive by the German forces against US positions near the town of Mortain in Normandy was named Operation Lüttich after the Belgian town of Liege, the site of a German victory in early WWI. Ever since then City Day is celebrated there on those dates. Belgorod was liberated on August 5th, and Kharkov on August 23rd. The goals of the operation were met, although it came at a price. On August 3rd, 1943, the Battle of Kursk reached its final stage: the Red Army began the Belgorod-Kharkov offensive operation, named “Polkovodets Rumyantsev” after one of the most prominent Russian generals of the 18th century.
